Introduction to the artist

Beninese painter and illustrator, Hector SONON was born in Cotonou in 1970. Aesthete, but above all a critic, Hector defines himself as the product of the Society. Society whose facts and gestures, smells and perfumes nourish his inspiration and open widely his knowledgeable eye on a variety of subjects. As a result of these observations, his art aims to be questioning, even inquisitive, with the objective of drawing the attention of his fellow human beings to elements that usually leave them indifferent.

An artist with a diverse background, Hector became aware of the power of the image when, at the age of 17, he began drawing in the press in Benin. It was then in 1987, during the period of the dictatorial military regime where freedom of speech and expression was almost non-existent. Without perceiving the meaning at the time, he was already a committed artist. A status that he did not feel the need to claim; the expression of his art had always been free, eclectic and without taboo.

Between 1997 and 2014, he then perfected his art, first at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, then as a boarder at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Visuels Saint Luc in Brussels.

From politics to culture, from voodoo tradition to social facts, all subjects are likely to create an emulation and pass under his brushes, knives and pencils. Through his paintings, watercolors, drawings and other mediums, Hector Sonon thus materializes a plural and multiform inspiration of the contemporary world.
